Pivot Point Comes To Echelon Edge Academy

One thing that is as important as our students' education, is the education of their Mentors. Over the weekend, Echelon Edge Academy had the privilege of having Pivot Point International's very own Sabine Bjork (cool name, right?) teach a two-day course involving "Artist-Access", the latest in Pivot Point Education, as well as hands-on Hair Sculpting.

Times are changing, the Generations are changing, and it's a matter of adapting to those changes, staying up to date in order to sustain our education. With "Artist-Access", we as educators have the ability of even greater teaching efficiency, and for our students, they will have the opportunity of even greater learning experiences!

Sabine's enthusiasm, her passion, just reignited and solidified the passion we all have within ourselves, and are so excited to share that passion with our students, and to continue helping them discover their passion in this amazing industry that we are in!

A huge shout out to Steve Lesh with Lesh International and BE Magazine who came and inspired our students with his talent and life experiences. Steve taught product knowledge on Lesh International, which is the product line that he created. Students were dazzled by his ability to cut and design hair while giving them real experiences that can help them in the industry. Steve stressed being in a positive environment and keeping yourself surrounded by positive people. We are grateful for the opportunity to be influenced by Steve and look forward to more classes in the future!

COMPETITIONS

At Echelon Edge Academy all our students take pride in doing their best in competitions. Our students are very creative and when they are given a challenge their enthusiasm and creativity is enthralling. This week, we had a small competition between available cosmetology students. The theme of the competition was "popular music videos." Students were grouped in fours, then they were off to tackle the elaborate hair styles presented in the music videos. From Nicki Minaj to Katy Perry to Lady Gaga the students had their hands full. It was a fun competition and reminded the students of the many different fields cosmetologists can go into. In the end the stylists who did the Lady Gaga-type hair-do won the contest. Congratulations girls! We enjoyed seeing the creativity of our students and look toward to future competitions.

November Graduates

We would like to congratulate all our December 2011 graduates from Echelon Edge Academy. We had an amazing 10 students graduate this month from our cosmetology and esthetics programs: Alex Palmer, Tyson Teuscher, Sara Pryor, Alicia Mickelson, Hannah Imboden, Heather Hildum, Kaitlin Cazier, Terry Dayhuff, Jennifer Aragon, and Amber Williams. Each student worked hard to learn the material and obtain the required hours it takes to graduate. All of the graduates were highlighted and received their certificates of completion, pivot point certificates, and certificates in specialized areas. After the graduation ceremony was complete, the families and all students joined one another for delicious refreshments. It is always exciting to see how our students progress throughout their time at Echelon. We wish them the best of luck in their new careers and hope to continue to see them at future Echelon Edge events.

Here's a little of what we were up to in October...

We started the month of with supporting Breast Cancer Awareness by adding pink to our dress code along with offering OPI's pink shatter polish to our clients. Then, our cosmetology and esthetic mentors were able to attend a wonderful and uplifting seminar for the beauty industry at the beginning of the month. Students were welcome to join for the second day, and we had a few of our "Super-star" students who came! We appreciate their eagerness to learn and willingness better our industry as a whole!

Zombie Makeover: Robin Bodily, an independent makeup artist, came and spooked us with a makeover on mentor, Darci Hansen. We were impressed by her talent which is also seen at Frightmares and multiple zombie movies!

Capitol: We had the opportunity to go to the capitol and fight for the beauty industry that we believe in. Someone is trying to pick apart our licensure, so in order to protect it, students, instructors, and salon professionals gathered to defend the reason we go to school. There was an overwhelming amount of support for our industry and the students felt empowered to know they were helping save our licenses!

Students enjoy creating a unique look that they can add to their portfolios and it is enjoyable seeing everyone's impressive creations! Are You Hireable? Danine Imboden with Remedez Salon presented a very informative class about how to make yourself appealing and hireable to a salon. She stressed the importance of appearance and professionalism while in school so students can take that straight into a salon. She also taught what is eye-catching to an employer when looking at resumes and portfolios, something every student needs to know!

Halloween Party: We know how to have fun! Halloween is always an event at Echelon Edge! Food, costumes, pumpkins, and fun! Costume contest winners were: Darci Hansen (Funniest), Sara Glessner (Scariest), and Whitney Bullock (Most Original). Our pumpkin contest winners were: 1st place: Danyell Begay, 2nd place: Corinne Nielson, 3rd place tie: Amy Lomax & Lix Merrill.

Graduates: We ended the month with saying farewell to one of our cosmetology students. Tiffiny Anderson completed her 2000 hours. We are so proud of her hard work and dedication. Good luck Tiffiny!

Little Hairdressers- by Rachel Downward

I was approached by one of our students, Tiffany, who had a bit of dilemma with her daughter cutting her own hair. It was simply described as, a "Mullet".

Is this sounding a bit familiar? It can be a mother's worst nightmare! Those beautiful locks of hair on the ground and your child standing there, with a pair of scissors. What can be worse, is being a hairdresser and looking at your child thinking, "How am I going to fix this?"

I too, faced that very same situation Mother's Day, 2011. I was cutting my husband's hair, my daughter observing from time to time while playing with her toys. She would occasionally disappear upstairs to watch tv, and for the last time, she didn't come back. I was finished cutting, and asked my husband to go upstairs and check on her. "Sophia, where did you get scissors from?", he said, as I had heard from downstairs. I quickly walked up the stairs thinking, "please don't be the bangs!" Thank goodness it wasn't, however instead, she decided to cut one side above the ear, and not only her, but Barbie needed a haircut as well.

I pondered for awhile, but decided Sophia would rock an Asymmetrical cut until that side grew back (she is currently sporting the Justin Beiber "swoop" if you care to know).

Point? What do we do in these types of situations? We obviously go to a hair school or salon to have it fixed of course, but it's coming up with the actual solution that we find the most difficult, "What kind of haircut do we give a child when they cut their own hair?"

As with Tiffany, we went through a couple of steps before we "customized" her child's cut:

1. We determined where the cut was made. In Tiffany's case, the cuts were made on both sides, giving the look of a heavy fringe/bang and all the length in the back (i.e. a "Mullet").

2. Tiffany discussed with her Mentor, several haircut options by looking through books and magazines before finalizing their decision.

3. Once decided, her Mentor explained to her how the cut was going to be done, step-by-step.

4. Followed by the cut, they went through and softened areas with specific texturizing techniques in order to compliment her daughter's facial features.

The end result: a short, customized "bob-cut" with graduated layers for texture.

An example of some problem-solving at Echelon Edge Academy. It is always important to our students to know how to help their clients in particular scenarios such as this one. We would hope that it never happens, but sometimes it does and we will be prepared.

Biggest Losers, in a Beautiful Way- by Rachel Downward

I don't watch very often, but when I have the chance to watch the Biggest Loser, my favorite portion is the "MAKEOVER" episodes; it may be a Hairdresser thing, I don't know, but something about transformation excites me! I get inspired. It's honestly the same for any Makeover show, really: America's Next Top Model, Ambush Makeover, What Not to Wear, etc., "Before & Afters" are simply amazing to witness, but even more so to be a part of!

I had the opportunity to participate in the making-over of Liz and Theresa. They are both a part of the Echelon Edge Academy family; Liz, a thriving student and Theresa, an ambitious educator. Both had successfully completed what EEA had called their own, Biggest Loser, inviting all students and educators as well as their loved ones to take part in a healthy challenge to better their well-being and self-improvement.

The two of them came to visit me at 9 Salon & Spa, where I was able to put my passion and artistic skills to work! I began with Liz, she was almost up for anything, I however had strict restrictions not to go RED (which was the first thing that comes to mind with Liz when I look at her). But that was okay, the more I thought about it, her fair skin, freckling along the nose and cheeks, blue eyes, and poise, I bounced around the idea of "Snow White". I wanted to richen and darken up her haircolor to a nice Espresso brown, and then take up her length to sit just above the shoulders, and rest along the collarbone. For the style and makeup, I created layering to accentuate Liz's natural curl, and lightly round-brushed for volume and body. I went with a light green shimmer for the eyes and a pink lip with a hint of peach to add a bit of warmth to the skin tone.

Last was Theresa. I wanted to lighten her dark hair, or at least break it up a bit to create some fluidity in her hair. I used a lightener (bleach) and foiled around her face and worked my way back, leaving a small, "mohawk" section on the top, so that the blondes would slightly peek through whenever there is movement in the hair. Now, anytime we go from dark to light, it can sometimes be questionable as to whether the hair is going to lighten evenly or not. Luckily, I had a fair amount of eveness, however the tonality that the lightener brought out did not compliment Theresa's skin tone, so I proceeded with a Toner to caramelize and with the contrast, it reminds me of a Reese's Peanut Buttercup (Yum! My favorite). For the cut, I created more layering around the face and back to enhance the fluidity of her chocolate/peanut buttery color. Theresa is also one with a fair skin tone, so I chose a neutral brown for the eye and wanted to add a "POP" of color with a bright, pink lip.

Two amazing, beautiful souls, inside and out! It was honor they gave me to work on them!

Kaley Couco’s Modern Textured Pony
Kaley found herself in good hands (hairstylist Charles Dujic's) prior to stepping onto the Golden Globes red carpet. Charles and Kaley collaborated to dream up a look that would contrast with her feminine, flesh-toned gown and together they settled on this modern, textured ponytail. To create her look, Charles first applied Fekkai Volumizing Foam at the roots of her hair then blow-dried. Next, he sprayed her hair with Bumble and bumble Spray de Mode and waved all of her hair with a 1-inch curling iron. He flipped her head over, brushed out her hair and gathered it into a ponytail just below the crown. After finger-placing the finished look, Charles locked in the finished style with Bumble and bumble Classic Hairspray.

Hair Cutting Techniques with Tommy Tusa of Farouk Systems USA

For those of us in this industry who have been to the Hair & Fashion Shows over the years, there has always been one show that we couldn't miss! Tommy & Marco for Farouk Systems, USA; speakers blairing of a heavy metal rock/techno number, a model standing center stage and two very energetic guys circling the model, performing crazy-amazing cutting and blowdrying all at once!!! Pure insanity, but one of the most entertaining shows you will ever see!

a Masquerade Ball on the Edge

Monday, October 25th, 2010, Echelon Edge Academy hosted a Masquerade Ball, on the Edge. Students were given the opportunity to portray their interpretations of disguise and display them on a runway Fashion Show.

The night included Trick or Treating for children along with a walk through a Spook Alley and their very own Costume Fashion Show for all guests at Echelon Edge to see! The runway show consisted of beautiful, sparkling masks, with feathers galore. And masculine, modern masks for the gentlemen abroad. A beautiful dance number performed by Brooke Brown and her father finished the opening of the Masquerade Ball.

The evening was a great success and we thank all of our sponsors: Beyond Glaze, Fazoli's, Hagermann's Bakehouse Cafe, Harmon's, Pirate O's, Ran Life Home Loans, Ream's, Toscano & Urban Trends. Fumi Eguchi - Hairdresser & Photographer

Echelon Edge Academy is excited to welcome Hairdresser turned Photographer, Fumi Eguchi, November 05th, 2010.

His passion for his art is shown through the beauty he creates. At 18 he decided to pack his bags and leave his native Japan. A fascination for art and fashion from his youth lead Fumi to hairdressing. Along with learning a new language, he competed in many hair competitions winning multiple awards.

Soon after graduating, Fumi demonstrated his extraordinary capacity for work, imagination, and inventiveness. At the 2002 winter Olympic closing ceremonies, Fumi styled hair for a runway show that included designs by Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, and Versace. That year, he was also the winner of the Hair Olympics 2002 in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, he joined the Tyson Daniel Studio Salon building his clientele and continuing his education through Pivot Point. Fumi started educating for TIGI and expanded his knowledge through education from Tony and Guy. He became the regional educator for the company and inspired many students and hairdressers across the country.

That next year, Fumi collaborated with Andrew Jose in opening J-Life Salon in Salt Lake City, he was the international artist for J-Life and the owner of J-Life USA. He then opened Proelle, an exclusive VIP salon that gave his clientele a progressive experience. Fumi has worked with Apollo Anton Ohno, Mandy Moore, and Andre and Masha Kirilinko.

With all of his experience in the beauty industry, he was seeking a way to capture that beautiful, timeless moment, which led him to photography. He has been putting tremendous effort into building a high-fashion portfolio.

Currently, Fumi is working towards his ultimate goal that consists of three elements; sharing his knowledge with hairdressers through offering continuing education, building his business by providing excellent customer service, and getting his images published in a high-fashion magazine.

On the evening of Monday, October 25th, Echelon Edge Academy will be hosting a Masquerade Hair Show & Ball, with a few activities throughout the night. There is no admission required, we simply invite all to come and enjoy an evening of mystery and disguise, a MASQUERADE!

6:00pm to 6:45pm - We invite the little ones to come dressed in costume and TRICK or TREAT their way through a Spook Alley where they will find a wax museum of sociable figurines.

6:45pm to 7:00pm - A parade of costumes!!! We want to show off what the little ones chose to be for Halloween; a Fairy Princess, Iron Man, a Ghost or a Bumble Bee, a display of costumes for all to see!

7:00pm - The first segment of the Masquerade Hair Show.

7:30pm - The second segment of the Masquerade Hair Show.

8:00pm - The final segment of the Masquerade Hair Show, followed by an enchanted evening of mingling and dancing!

The stairway lined with black, red and silver balloons, beautiful displays of everything about the body, your feet & hands, the face, and simply everything skin care! Our friends at Dermalogica, Glymed, O-P-I and Urban Trends were so generous to donate gift baskets, and several product items to be a part of our Giveaways along with yummy refreshments provided by Isabella's Catering.

There was an outstanding line of guests receiving Laser treatments performed by students of Echelon Edge Academy, under the supervision of their mentors. Presentations by Dermalogica and Glymed were given at the end of the evening, being so informative about the importance of skin care and helping our guests, individually determine the right regimans for their skin types with complimentary skin analysis.
